”Sami Välimäki’s stunning rise is set to continue in 2021 after a debut season on the European Tour that saw him win in just his sixth tournament and named ‘Rookie of the year’.
The Finnish star, 22, winner of the Oman Open in March, ended the year in 11th place on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai and will play his first World Golf Championship in Mexico in March.
In 19 starts in 2020, Sami had a total of seven top-10 finishes, including a share of fifth at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
It was enough to see him follow the likes of Sir Nick Faldo, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm, who all went on to become number one in the world, in being crowned ‘Rookie of the year’ and end the year at 70th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
The youngster from Nokia said: “Rookie of the Year became a goal of mine so it was an incredible feeling to finish it off with a strong final performance of 2020 and to be the first player from Finland to win this award is really special.”
